Highland League team of the year

Hello everyone hope you enjoy this blog. With the season coming to a close very soon I have announced my Highland League team of the season. This squad is packed with hard-working and quality players.

Goalkeeper Daniel Bell (Keith) The on loan Keith keeper delivered a superb performance against his former club Brora Rangers due to him, preventing Brora from winning by a larger margin.Despite Brora being crowded champions, he stood out well on front of the SHFLTV cameras. This has asked many questions such as why should Bell not be included in the Buckie Thistle squad. He would be a very important player in any Highland League club. He impressed me alot.

Right Back Craig McKeown (Formartine)  McKeown is a big leader in Formartine’s defence and also is very strong when going forward. The hard-working player scored a cracking free kick against Fort William which sailed into the top right hand corner and I was lucky enough to witness the goal. The former Dundee player certainly deserves a place in my squad. He works extremely well with Hamish Munro and Stuart Smith to do 11 clean sheets during this campaign. He played a key role in Formartine’s win in their first major piece of silverware which was the Aberdeenshire Cup and got himself  a goal on that historic day.

Left Back Russell McBride (Fraserburgh)  A big strong experienced defender and the voice of the back four. He often scores goals with his powerful headers. He has bagged three goals this season. This is why Fraserburgh  have finished 5th place along with Fraserburgh’s deadly Midfielders and Strikers.

Central Back Ross Tokely (Brora) He features in a solid defence at Brora and has score a lot of goals. The squad he is in can often be called the Ross County and Inverness Caley Thistle dream team as it’s packed with players from both SPFL Highland teams. Tokely’s a  fit and an important player who has bossed the Highland League since returning from Ross County. All ready he has won the North of Scotland Cup and the League with the Cattach’s. He beat off competition from his team-mate Grant Munro to get into this team and this was a very hard decision to make.

Central Back Neil McLean (Inverurie Locos) The Captain of Locos specializes in free kicks and deadly crosses which both causes defences all sort of problems. They are Locos main threat with most of their goals coming from deliveries. He is an fans favourite at Harlaw Park and is rightly the man with the Captain armband. Tomorrow night he will be leading his side out at Christie Park in the Aberdeenshire Shield Final against Turriff United as they look to get their hands on a trophy this season. Also they have  finished in second place in the league table and could finish off their campaign in style by beating Brora Rangers on Saturday.

Midfielder Darren Bailey (Lossiemouth) Bailey has impressed me a lot with his determination and hunger for goals while playing for Lossie which has been shown clearly. He always gives hundred percentage in every game and get the team going. I just don’t know why he wasn’t included in the Formartine squad as he is a great player and stands out in the Coaster’s team. He impressed me especially in the match against Buckie and he was on form in that match bagging a goal in a 3-1 won over their rivals Buckie Thistle.

Midfielder Craig Simpson (Deveronvale) He is a talented young player and an excellent goal scorer. A super Midfielder for the Vale and form good partnerships with the Charlesworth brothers and Craig Cowie. He always creatives goals and his pace is very fast making defenders look bad. In a derby game against Turriff United he was the man of the match getting a cracking hat trick. Which include a well placed volley and it impressed me. Recently he got awarded the young player of the year which he deserved to get. If Craig Simpson is reading I would like to say well done on getting the award.

Midfielder Gary McGowan (Turriff United) A top finisher and a menace to oppositions defences. He has done very well with team-mate Garry Harris this season scoring 42 goals between them. His best goal in my opinion is the one against Wick Academy in the Scottish Cup when he cut back and slotted the ball perfectly out of the reach of the keeper.

Midfielder Andrew Greig (Brora Rangers) The skillful player is fast and is in the driving force of the Brora attackers along  side Zander Sutherland and Captain Steven Mackay. He runs down the wings taking on players and making them look like fools afterwards.Greig has scored 11 goals. I feel he has been brilliant this season.

Striker Scott Barbour (Fraserburgh) A top young Striker who I think personally should be playing at an even higher level of football as everytime I watch he always amazes me with his great ability and skill. He’s the Highland League’s best striker in the league in my opinion. He has bagged lots of goals this season with the help of his striker partner PA Bruce and the rest of the excellent Broch squad. In one match I watched he scored five goals against Fort William and on that day he was on unbelievable form.

Striker Zander Sutherland (Brora) Zander is a top striker who has notched up 23 goals. In a successful season for the former Buckie forward getting his third league medal. He is a player that can change a match with a bit of magic. A dangerman who you need to watch out for and also needs to be marked at all time. He has enjoyed an effective partnership with Steven Mackay. He is one of the main threats for opponents.
