FORMARTINE PROGRESS TO THE SECOND ROUND OF THE SCOTTISH CUP

Formartine United progressed to the second round of the Scottish Cup as they beat a hard working Gretna 2008 3-1 in perfect playing conditions. Gary Wood, Scott Barbour and Johnny Crawford all scored to wrap up the victory for the hosts.

Dean Smith grabbed a goal for the visitors before the break but this couldn’t stop them going out of the cup on a historic day for the club as they took part in their first away fixture in the Scottish Cup.

The Highland League side faced Gretna a club who used to be in the Scottish Premier League back in 2008 and that year they went busted. Two months later a miracle happened with them reforming into Gretna 2008 and they currently play in the Lowland League under fan ownership. Now they had a fruitful squad full of talented youngsters. Goalie Vincent Parker was a standout with him performing some superb saves to shorten the goal margin.

The first real chance of the game went to Formartine as Scott Barbour played a short corner to Graham Rodgers who passed it back to the centre forward and he chipped it high into the box with Gary Wood heading over the crossbar. Soon after the hosts almost took the lead, Paul Lawson whipped in a corner which Cammy Keith headed wide. In the 12th minute the deadlock was broken by the home side,Rodgers cleverly found unmarked Keith in the box but he missed his footing. The ball fell perfectly for Barbour, who calmly smashed it home.

Minutes later Lawson’s free kick found Craig McKeown but the captain was unlucky not to get a connection onto it as he went in for a diving header. The hosts pushed for a second goal, Keith saw his header cleared off the line and his rebound was brilliantly saved by keeper Vincent Parker. Then Lawson stepped up to send a free kick from his textbook area low and hard but Parker did well to hold onto it. Gretna threatened with Scott Milligan blasting a shot which went wide of the target.

In the 42nd minute the visitors equalised with Brandon Longcake picking out Dean Smith with a long ball. The striker sprinted one and one with the keeper and was composed to tuck the ball beyond helpless Andy Reid to spark crazy celebrations.Just after the break Gretna came out all fired up and hungry for goals like a pack of ferocious wolves wanting blood.

The first chance of the half came to the Pitmeddon side with Barbour turning his marker however from a tight angle he hit the side netting. Then Stuart Anderson let fly with a blitzing strike which Parker was at full stretch to tremendously tip the ball over the bar.  In the 59th minute Lawson whipped in a corner which Johnny Crawford rose highest to powerfully head the ball into the net to give United the lead for the second time in this match. Soon after Lawson played a free kick short to Anderson whose drive was punched to safety by the keeper.

At the other end the away side almost levelled the game again with Sam Atkinson curling a brilliant free kick which Reid tipped onto the bar. In the 83rd minute Neil Gauld drove into the box and was adjudged to have brought down by Connor Casey so referee Steven Traynor awarded United a spot kick and sent off Casey. Gary Wood smashed the resulting penalty home to wrap up the victory. Formartine go through to the next round.
