Willie West was over the moon with Shield win

By a Highland League writer

Fraserburgh lifted the Aberdeenshire Shield  with a 1-0 win over Cove thanks to a header from Marc Dickson. Scottish Fitba Base spoke to Broch’s Willie West.

West was delighted to pick up Broch’s second piece of silverware this campaign with Mark Cowie’s side winning the Aberdeenshire Cup last year as they defeated Inverurie Locos 2-0.But he admitted that the team has let the supporters down in the league.

He said: “I feel absolutely brilliant about winning the cup. It’s probably the most underdog team I have played for in a final where we have come out on top. Cove were always going to be tough and strong favourites but especially without four of our key players who were suspended, so it just makes it that extra special!

“I am just chuffed for the fans. We have let down in the league this year, especially at home  but hopefully these cup wins make up for it. I would just like to thank all the Broch fans as they are great to play in front of. This win gives us confidence that we can on our day beat the bigger teams. The Broch’s problem for as long as I have played is being inconsistency and I am hopeful that we can improve on that next year.”

West’s main aim for next season is to stay in the starting line up and he believes that Cowie should get Highland League manager of the year.

West said: ” Next season, first and foremost I want to stay in the starting 11 as we will likely have 1 or 2 players added. Not too sure what position Mark will want me to play but I am happy to be playing anywhere as long as I am in the team. It would be nice to get double figures on the goal tally again!

“It’s been great playing under Mark. Less competition for the middle of the park with him on the sidelines, haha. I think he deserves manager of the year for what he has achieved in his 1st managerial season.”
